This DIY toothpaste is completely natural, non toxic and incredibly easy to make. Most importantly, it’s made of ingredients that you can actually recognize and pronounce. This is important because there are possibly harmful chemicals in store bought toothpaste. Even toothpastes labeled “natural” can include chemicals in their ingredient list. These chemicals are ingested into your body every time you brush. This is why we prefer to make our ourselves. An added bonus to making your own toothpaste is that it costs much less than buying it from the store.
Baking Soda acts as a gentle exfoliator that removes stains while disinfecting the gums and teeth. Coconut Oil is the base that binds everything together. Peppermint Essential Oil is antibacterial, meaning it kills and fights bacteria and germs, making it a great oil for dental health. You can alternatively use Tea Tree Essential Oil, as it has similar benefits (but be aware, it’s an acquired taste).
Natural DIY Toothpaste
- 2 Tbsp Virgin Coconut Oil softened at room temperature
- 2 Tbsp Baking Soda
- 2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Mix all ingredients together until smooth, then transfer to an airtight container.
Apply a pea sized amount to toothbrush, and brush as usual.
Store in a cool, dry place.
This toothpaste has a shelf life of 2-3 weeks (we recommend making only one batch at a time). You will know that it's past its prime when the taste becomes bitter.
Essential oils are very concentrated and should be used with care. We recommend learning about each essential oil before use in order to fully benefit from them.
Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have pre-existing health conditions. Keep away from children and pets.
